The name Carnatic music refers to the traditional music of a region called Carnatic. Books on recent Indian history say that before British invasion, the kingdoms in South India were: Travancore which is most of today’s Kerala, Mysore which is the southern part of today’s Karnataka excluding the west coast, and Carnatic which is most of the remaining South India (almost the same as Madras State of the 1950s  which is all of today’s Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra and some neighboring areas). When the Carnatic kingdom came under British, they rechristened it Madras Presidency and the town of Chennaipatnam as Madras City. Carnatic classical music is in relation to speakers of the Dravidian group.

Carnatic music is the classical music of Southern India. In its most basic form it is a monophonic song with improvised variations. There are 72 basic scales on the octave, and a rich variety of melodic motion. Both melodic and rhythmic structures are varied and compelling. It is one of the world’s oldest and richest musical traditions.

Many concerts are now being held to keep the tradition of Carnatic music alive. These concerts are not only well received in India but abroad as well. The modern concert format (kaccheri paddhati) is largely dominated by kritis which (were either composed by "the trinity" that is Syama Sastry, Tyagaraja, and Muthuswami Dikshitar) or vaggeyakaras following their styles.

The traditional musical instruments of Carnatic music are Veena, Thavil, Nagaswara, Tambura, Mirudangam and Ghatam.

Outstanding musicians who have nurtured, fostered and kept alive the musical traditions of Carnatic music and have become household names and include Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Saint Thyagaraja.

New Tamil movie music is basically westernized music with a Carnatic flavour to it making it a unique combination which is highly appealing. The music has hints of classical Carnatic music as well as new age modern rock, beats, rap and disco. The two pioneers of new Tamil movie songs are Illayaraja and AR Rahman both having their roots from Tamil Nadu.

Illayaraja revolutionized Tamil Film Music with his unique music style which was a blend of Tamil folk songs, Indian and Western classical music, Pop and Jazz. Annakili was his first film which was a runaway success, heralding a new era in film music. He dominated Tamil Film Music from  the late 70s till the 90s. He has experimented immensely with his music and has even modified original Thyagaraja compositions like "Marimari ninni…". He had remarkable speed and he holds the record of scoring for two films in five days, shuttling between studios from session to session round the clock. He worked with many directors some of them being Baarathiraja, Balachandar, Balu Mahendra, Mahendran, and Maniratnam and has given 100s of all time hit songs. He has scored music for nearly 500 movies. Apart from Tamil he has also scored for other language films like Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and English. His latest Hindi movie Cheeni Kum has been a runaway success and the music was critically accliamed.

The 90′s saw a new music genius, A.R.Rahman who graduated to film music after composing music for advertisements as jingles. His first film Roja made him a national sensation and he won many best music director awards for it.He uses all the modern equipment’s and facilities to compose his tunes but still manages to retain the Indian flavor in his music. He is one music director who though manages to give a few movies but still believes in giving quality music. He has worked with all the major directors like Maniratnam (Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Bombay, Iruvar, Vuirye, Yuva, Guru), Shankar (Gentleman, Kathalan, Indian), Balachandar (Duet), Barathiraaja(Kizhaku cheemaile, Karuthamma). In Hindi he has worked with Ram Gopal Varma (Rangeela, Daud), Ashutosh Gowarikar (Swades, Lagaan). He has scored music for Telugu movies also (Gang Master, Super Police). He released a music album Vanthe Matharam to commemorate India’s Fiftieth Year of Independence. His another recent Hindi movie included the smash hit Rang De Basanti whose music had become a country wide rage.

Old Tamil Songs MP3 Music

Listening to old Tamil songs makes one feel serene and calm. Such rare old Tamil songs mp3 downloads are available for free download or for a small fee online. The lyrics and the remix old Tamil songs are also available for free download.

The old Tamil songs were based on the classical music of South India that is Carnatic music. They concentrated more on the melody of the songs and most of them were devotional songs or love songs with instruments like mridangam, veena, ghatam etc providing the base. The movies helped a lot in popularizing Tamil music not only in South India but  across the nation and overseas as well. Many concerts are now being held overseas and the response is humbling.

The M.S.Viswanathan-Ramamurthy duo dominated the South India Tamil Film Music during mid 50s and 60s. They were responsible for getting a change in the orchestration of the songs in Tamil films. They made use of the guitar and the drums, and were instrumental in introducing Western music into Tamil film songs, which until that time was pretty much classical Carnatic oriented. The combination of M.S.Viswanathan and   T.K.Ramamurthy (as the Music Directors), Kannadasan (as the lyricist),   T.M.Soundarajan (as the male singer) and  P.Susheela (as the female singer), created magic and produced many excellent songs in the 50′s and the 60′s. Listening to music made by this team was sheer bliss.

Later day Tamil film music directors like V.Kumar, the duo of Shankar- Ganesh, started their careers under the wings of  M.S. Viswanathan and T.K.Ramamurthi. The duo scored  music for a couple of  Hindi films as well but did not meet the level of success as seen by them in the Tamil music industry. The duo split sometime in the mid-sixties after which MSV continued to give music for Tamil films with great success, almost into the mid-seventies, before Ilaiyaraja came into the field, and established his own unique style with greater success, while Ramamurthi did not meet with as much of a success in his solo ventures.

Tamil music is a treat for the ears. Its a perfect blend of both Carnatic classical as well as western music. Tamil music industry has a vast audience which seems to be increasing everyday. A lot of cross over artistes now sing for Tamil music directors n their singers too are singing in different languages. Tamil music has a vast variety. It not only caters to the youngsters with its hip hop songs n techno remix beats but also has music for d elderly who prefer their classical n slow songs. Incase u have not been introduced to Tamil music before then do download the free mp3s n videos available n enjoy it.

Tamil music has come a long way from the music which was in the beginning only classical Carnatic based to the music today which boasts of being the second biggest music industry in India after Hindi. Two of the most famous music directors of India, Ilayaraaja and A.R. Rahman both have Tamil origins. The music is usually a mixture of Carnatic and Western instruments, though recent trends have invalidated the need for an orchestra and preference is given to synthesizers and other electronic instruments. The music of the pre-Christian era that is the Sangam period is Tamil music. The Tamil film has become a powerful medium for popularizing the music of the Tamil people, and not surprisingly, Tamil film music often draws its inspiration to a greater or lesser extent, from each of the three categories -devotional, classical and popular folk music.

Some of my favorite Tamil songs are:

  1. Jagado Dharana which is a Carnatic devotional song
  2. Mahaganpatim which is a Carnatic song sung in the praise of Lord Ganesha.
  3. Humma Humma from Bombay which has music by AR Rehman.
  4. Chandralekha by AR Rehman.
