Bela Vikar recorded the first modern Hungarian folk music in 1895. Modern Hungarian folk music has its roots in the 18th century during the reign of the Hapsburg Empire. Famous folk artists then included Laszlo Lajtha, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly. Franz Listz popularized the Roma Hungarian folk music which was originally music of the Roma people or the gypsies.

Verbunkos is a dance music form of folk music which has rhythmic beats to it and is characterized by using alternate slow and fast dance moves. Famous Verbunkos musicians include Roby Lakatos, Sandor Lakatos, Panna Czinka, Bihari, Hector Berlioz, Janos Lavotta etc. 

Tanchaz was made popular in the 1970’s and means dance house. This is also a dance music Hungarian folk style. It begins with a slow tempo verbunkos (recruiting dance), followed by swifter csárdás dances. Popular tanchaz artists are Ferec Sibor, Sandor Timar, Muzsikas, Marta Sebestyen, Felix Lajko, Mihaly Dresch and many more.

Hungary’s biggest musician is Franz Listz a world famous pianist. He composed The Hungarian Rhapsody and Les Prelude. Along with Liszt and his French Romantic tendencies, Ferenc Erkel’s Italian and French-style operas, with Hungarian words, and Mihaly Mosonyi’s German classical style, helped set the stage for future music.

The foundation of Hungarian opera was laid in the 18th century when operas were either in German or Italian languages. Jozsef Chudy’s Prince Pikkó and Jutka Perzsi is considered to be the 1st of the many distinctively Hungarian operas. Towards the later half of the 20th century Bela Bartok and  Zoltan Kodaly had become the country’s most popular musicians especially Kodaly. They used more of folk styles and blended the different music cultures of Hungary to create a music which was to become popular with generations to come.

Modern classical musicians who have mixed classical and folk Hungarian music to create a unique combination include Ferenc Szabó, Pál Kadosa, Ferenc Farkas, György Ránki, László Vidovszky and Zoltán Jeney.
