Folk music, in the most basic sense of the term, is music by and for the common people. Folk songs are commonly seen as songs that express something about a way of life that exists now or in the past or is about to disappear (or in some cases, to be preserved or somehow revived). The rise of folk music as a popular genre began with performers whose own lives were rooted in the authentic folk tradition. Thus, for example, Woody Guthrie began by singing songs he remembered his mother singing to him as a child. Later, in the 1930s and 1940s, Guthrie collected folk music and also composed his own songs, as did Pete Seeger. In the 1960s such singers as Joan Baez, Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan followed in Guthrie’s footsteps and to begin writing "protest music" and topical songs, particularly against the Vietnam War, and likewise expressed in song their support for the American Civil Rights Movement. Since the 1970s a genre of "contemporary folk", fueled by new singer-songwriters, has continued to make the coffee-house circuit and keep the tradition of acoustic non-classical music alive in the United States. Such artists include Dawn Xiana Moon, Chris Castle, Steve Goodman, John Prine, Cheryl Wheeler, Bill Morrissey, and Christine Lavin. Fom Ireland The Pogues and The Corrs brought traditional tunes back into the album charts.

Neofolk music is a modern form of music that began in the 1980s. Fusing traditional European folk music with post-industrial music forms, historical topics, philosophical commentary, traditional songs and paganism, the genre is largely European. Although it is not uncommon for neofolk artists to be entirely acoustic, playing with entirely traditional instruments.

Early Western Pop music artists include Tommy Steele, Marty Wilde, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobbejaan Schoepen, and Peggy Lee, but other artists like Bill Haley and his Comets, Platters, Fats Domino and Elvis Presley became popular with the younger generation. Western Pop music teen idols of the 1960s included the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Cliff Richard, Sandy Shaw, The Who, Lulu, The Small Faces, Gene Pitney, and The Shadows. A proliferation of new sounds from the disco era included the vocal overdubbed harmonies of Carpenters, ABBA, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, the piano-based pop of Billy Joel and Elton John, the country styling of the Eagles and the rock-influenced pop of Rod Stewart, Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac. Notable highlights for pop music in the 1980s are Michael Jackson’s second Epic label release, Thriller, which went on to become the best-selling album of all time. Among the most successful pop acts of the 1990s were R&B-influenced pop acts such as Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, En Vogue, Salt N Pepa, MC Hammer, C&C Music Factory, Brandy, and TLC. Non-R&B artists such as Cher, Michael Bolton, Bryan Adams, Elton John etc were also phenomenally successful during that decade. In the 2000s, pop music paved the way for the multi-platinum successes of artists like Anastacia, Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé Knowles, Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ciara, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Modern Talking, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Shakira, NSync, Pussycat Dolls and Usher.

Pop music is often criticized for being overly simple and repetitive. Compared to other styles of music, it is often viewed as ‘easier’ than other genres. Pop vocalists often do not write their own music or play an instrument, and the intricacy of other instruments is nowadays often traded for simple background chords and synthesizers. Many pop musicians are vocalists, and due to performers using lip synching technology, they often focus strictly on the image.

Savage Garden is a band that requires mention for its hits like truly madly deeply, the animal song etc. Elton John is another artist who deserves to be in the hall of fame. His candle in the wind in memory of the late Lady Diana had got a tear to almost every eye.
