Chinese music has a history which is more than 8000 years old. The first evidence of music in the form of instruments and artifacts was found in the Zhou dynasty (1122 BC – 256 BC). Traditional Chinese instrumental music is heterophonic meaning more than one instrument is used. Traditional Chinese vocal music is more often solo and sung in a thin high nonresonant voice or a falsetto.

Chinese instruments are classified into four subtypes they being bowed string, plucked string, wind and percussion instruments. Some famous instruments are chu, sheng, panpipes, zither, flute, bell, drum etc.
