Pop music was made popular in Afghanistan by the radio especially Radio Kabul and Radio Afghanistan in the 40’s and 50’s. The 70’s were considered as the golden years of Afghanistan music. The pop music included traditional Afghani music with Indian traits and use of European instruments like guitar, drums etc. it also included filmy music from India and Pakistan, Iraqi music and music from Tajikistan.

The 50’s saw the roots of pop music being laid in Afghanistan through the radio. Most of the singers who performed on the radio were non traditional singers also known as amateur singers. These singers moved the wheels in favor of the growth of afghani pop music which flourished not only in Afghanistan but also the neighboring Pakistan what with an estimated 3 to 4 million Afghanis staying there. The popular amateur singers are Ahmad Zahir, who was the most famous of them all; Sarban, Salma Jabani, Haidar Salim, Naghma and Mangal, Hangama, Parasto etc. the earlier famous female afghani pop singers were Parwin and Farida Mahwash.

Since 2001 post Taliban, afghani music is getting a new life and Afghani pop artists like Kaboul Ensemble are getting recognized out side Afghanistan as well.

Some of my favorite Afghani pop songs are:

  1. O bacche by Farida Mahwash
  2. Harchad ke door by Ahmad Zahir
  3. Dostit darom by Ahmad Zahir
  4. Imshab by Haidar Salim
  5. Parda nesheen by Haidar Salim

Before the soviet and Taliban took over Afghanistan, Kabul was the centre of not just trade but also music in Afghanistan. Heart was also equally important for its music especially for outsiders. The lyrics of afghani classical songs were in Pashto or farsi or Persian languages.
Afghani classical music, also known as Klasik, is heavily influenced from the north Indian classical music style. The reason for this is that many Hindustani classical singers immigrated to the royal court in Kabul in the 1860’s on invitation from Amir Sher Ali Khan. Thus Klasik is divided into instrumental forms and vocal forms that is raga or nagme or ghazal or tarana etc.

Unlike their Hindustani counterparts the afghani ragas are more focused on the rhythmn and use the tabla as their base more often. The other instruments used in afghani music are dohol, zebraghali, rubab, tambur, sitar, dayra, dutar, dilruba etc.

The rubab is known as the lion of all instruments and is often considered as the national instrument of Afghanistan. It’s a lute like instrument and is the fore runner of the Indian sarod. Popular rubabplayers are Aziz Herawi, Ustad Mohammed Omar, Mohammed Rahim Khushnawaz, Homayun Sakhi, Essa Kassemi etc.

Famous afghani classical singers are Ustad Mohammed Hussain Sarahang, Ustad Nato, Ustad Qasim etc.

Some popular Afghani classical songs are:

  1. Amir khusrow by Ustad Sarahang
  2. Sonbul by Ustad Sarahang
  3. Saaqui by Sharif Ghazal
  4. Gojri todi by Sharif Ghazal

Afghanistan has a rich music culture heritage which has sadly not been exposed to the world due to the country’s political situation. Download free afghani songs mp3, rare old traditional Rubab Herati songs mp3 or new latest recent released Afghani pop songs mp3 or Afghani folk songs mp3, classical Afghani songs mp3 or Afghani songs lyrics in Pashto, Farsi, Hindi, videos, video clips etc all available for free download.

Afghanistan is a land of rich culture and heritage. It’s a paradox in a way that a form of music so beautiful and enthralling has still not caught the world’s eye because of its political issues. The music of Afghanistan is similar to Indian, Pakistani, central Asia especially the classical music due to the geographical proximity. Also in olden days trades flourished between the countries thus a cross exchange of cultural nuances was obvious.

After the Taliban banned instrumental and public music most of the musicians had to flee the country and become refugees elsewhere or they had to be very discrete about their music. But this was during the 90’s and post Taliban in 2001 music has once again reemerged and become a part of life. It’s heartening to see that the rich music culture which surely deserves a world audience is getting noticed slowly.

Some famous Afghani songs are:

  1. Modati shod ke tara by Ahmed Wali
  2. Asalaam by Ahmed Jawid
  3. Sonbul by Ustad Sarahang
  4. Saaqui by Sharif Ghazal
